Unter der Informetrie lassen sich alle quantitative Methoden der Informationswissenschaft zusammenfassen. Hierbei werden einerseits mathematische und statistische Modelle als auch die Anwendung solcher Methoden thematisiert. Die Anwendungsbereiche sind dabei vielfältig: Von der Evaluation von Informationssystemen durch Metriken wie Precision und Recall bis hin zur Untersuchung wissenschaftlicher Kommunikation (Scientometrics). Wissenschaftliche Kommunikation kann sowohl in Form von formalen Publikationen und Zitationen analysiert werden, aber auch hinsichtlich der Aufmerksamkeit in alternativen Medien wie Blogs oder Referenzmanagern (Altmetrics).
