Smart Wearables (z.B. Aktivitätstracker, wie Fitbit oder Garmin oder Smart Wachtes, wie die Apple Watch) messen nicht nur den Puls, sondern ermöglichen auch eine Schlafanalyse, das Zählen von Schritten und das Aufzeichnen von Trainingseinheiten. Mit Hilfe von Aktivitätstrackern ist es für die Nutzer immer einfacher die eigene Fitness und Gesundheit zu überwachen und zu messen – Stichwort: Selbst-Quantifizierung.

Der neue Forschungsbereich eröffnet der Informationswissenschaft einen Einblick in Informationsdienste des Gesundheitswesen. Hierbei liegt der Schwerpunkt nicht nur auf der Benutzerfreundlichkeit, der Nützlichkeit und dem Vertrauen (Datenschutz), sondern auch auf Instanzen wie zum Beispiel Krankenkassen. Eine ebenfalls wichtige Rolle spielt auch die Kombination von Aktivitätstrackern und Social Media.
