Start of studies - Bachelor Computational Linguistics (integrative)

Welcome to linguistics studies at the HHU

Program structure

The Bachelor of Computational Linguistics teaches both theoretical and practical aspects of the subject. If you are interested in language, but are also open to the disciplines of Computer Science and Mathematics, you are in good hands with this study program. Programming knowledge is not a prerequisite and is taught in a practical way in the basic modules. The basic modules are followed by specialisation in subfields of both Computer Science and Linguistics.

In the introductory phase of your studies, you will acquire basic knowledge in the areas of linguistics, formal methods and programming. In addition to an overview of the current state of research, you will learn the skills you need to grasp and describe phenomena and problems in computational linguistics. From the third semester onwards, you will enter deeper into more complex areas of Computational Linguistics. You will learn to implement complex programming projects and to develop solutions for specific tasks of Computational Linguistics.

The course is completed with a Bachelor's thesis in which you work independently on a problem of your own choice and demonstrate that you have mastered the theory and practice of computational linguistic research.

Career perspectives

Since the sector of Computational Linguistics is gaining in importance in business and industry, the demand for well-trained computational linguists has risen sharply recently, in particular because of the recent success of artificial neural networks. Thanks to their well-founded, versatile training, computational linguists can work in most other fields of Artificial Intelligence and Data Science. Specific jobs for computational linguists are for example the following: Machine translation, Text generation, Language data analysis for marketing purposes (social media monitoring), Lexicographic activities (computer-aided dictionary creation), Development or optimization of search engines, Automatic author recognition or style analysis of texts, Development of dialogue systems such as Siri, Cortana, Google Now.
